The Big Box - Kindergarten Oakville

If you’re reading this blog and you’re familiar with Forest Grove then our approach to children and their individuality is not new to you.

As much as the staff can teach and educate others on our philosophy sometimes a new perspective and alternative explanation works wonders.

Toni Morrison was inspired to write a children’s book with her 15 year old son after he was told he, “couldn't handle his freedom." Not long after the incident she penned, The Big Box.

The story goes on to describe 3 children who, based on their elders, couldn’t handle their freedom and in turn were put in a box and given materialistic possessions to fill their void.

The story is brilliant, and as entertaining as it is for children, it’s truly a plea to adults who fail to realize the need for individuality in children.

The message is simple as it’s littered throughout the beautifully illustrated pages;

"I know you are smart and I know that you think
You are doing what is best for me.
But if freedom is handled just your way
Then it's not my freedom or free."

If you’re out and about and able to read this wonderful book you should definitely give it a whirl!
