Not Fine, thank you.

Hiat Labib - Monday, January 14, 2013

Usually when a student comes into Forest Grove we greet them as we would any person we love. Sometimes there is a hug, a quick snuggle, maybe even a high-five but regardless of these things that have a tendency of varying from day to day we always ask the question, 'How are you?'.

This simple question lets our kiddos know that they matter and we care.

However, there's a catch to the question; they can't say, 'fine'.

You can be silly, yucky, smelly, tired, angry, happy, great... in fact, you can be all of those things but 'fine' just seems to fall short.

As we continue to learn about emotions and labeling our feelings it's only necessary that kids are encouraged to take two seconds to really reflect on how they're feeling at every given moment. Recognizing an emotion is recognizing the tone we carry with us and the beat that we march to.

Once we removed the 'F' word (...fine) children began going into huge amount of details explaining their emotions and why they were feeling that way. It turned out that it wasn't just the teachers that weren't pleased with the standard response but it was also the students that thrived once we removed it.

Give it a try at home! And if your children respond with, 'fine' ask them what that means and what it feels like to be fine. I can guarantee an interesting little moment.

So dear parents and blog readers... have a  splendid, super, fantastic, thrilling day.... anything but fine.
