Simple Science

Hiat Labib - Friday, February 07, 2014

We're thinking it's time to pluralize the word season in 'cold and flu season' because these days the students are all into sharing when it comes to their germs.

A few weeks ago the JK/SK class practiced a classic experiment where they used a visual representation to show how tricky it can be to remove the germs from our hands. In this particular case we used glitter (not the best choice for little girls who took a liking to being to sparkly) and asked the kids to try to wash the glitter...err germs... off while washing their hands the same way they normally would. To their surprise the germs didn't want to budge until their hands were covered in a seriously soapy lather.

As soon as the students understood the visual concept they were excited and challenged by the idea. Needless to say we've had an excited group of hand washers ever since that day.

A Challenge

Hiat Labib - Thursday, January 23, 2014

Today I had two 5 year olds an 11 year old and one 6 year old ask me what a D.U.I was. My answer, 'It's when someone is irresponsible when they're driving... ask your mom and dad about the rest when you get home.' By 3:30pm today I heard and entire classroom talk about a certain celebrity getting in trouble for being DRUNK (can you believe it?!?! - it was alarming for me too).

It's now 3:45pm and I want to initiate a challenge; If J.B makes his way to your dinner table conversation tonight discuss as you wish but follow it up by showing your children what the true definition of a hero and role model HERE

Sabotage Much?

Hiat Labib - Thursday, January 16, 2014

There’s always one – the saying is far too true.

Honoring individuality remains the priority but what happens when an individual finds amusement in being a saboteur?

I’ve always been fascinated by the child that marches to the beat of their own drum and breaks free of the expected.  It's the authenticity of those moments that makes teachers and parents hope that the creativity and confidence they exemplify at 2, 3, 4… years old remains intact during resume writing, child raising and relationship building.

There is, however another type of child; the saboteur. Spending their free time going against the grain and wreaking havoc on the plans and accomplishments of others. This is an isolating experience for the child that is always being scolded by peers yet can’t help by being inspired by the cause and effect of tense situations.

You know the type, perhaps you've called the school to discuss a situation like this one.

According to the experts, here are some other reasons why children sabotage:

  • Wanting to stay in one’s comfort zone
  • A familiarity with failure
  • A need to be in control
  • Need for excitement or an adrenaline rush
  • Concern about others’ opinions
  • Choosing discontent or despondency over success

And here is what we try to do to correct the habit:

  • Remind children that they are capable of more.
  • Enlist a partner who will prevent them from exhibiting sabotaging behaviors.
  • Promise children that you will not give up on them.
  • Celebrate successes along the way to the bigger goal.

Oh Canada

Hiat Labib - Tuesday, January 07, 2014

It's a c-c-c-c-COLD one out there, TOO cold to have children walking or playing outside! That's why Forest Grove will be driving all children to and from local schools until further notice. The fitness program will also be moved indoors where the students will be participating in gymnastics, yoga and dance-a-thons!

I realize I may stand alone on this one but does anyone else ever feel the need to put on a  brave face and conquer the elements like some sort of uber Canadian super hero?!

I'm thinking it's just me but don't worry, it's gonna way too hot in a few months and we'll forget all about this -40 business.

Giving Hands

Hiat Labib - Friday, December 06, 2013

“Look at this toy stuff!” he said. Usually one to fight over a toy during play time it was baffling to watch him willingly (and excitedly) hand over a bag of new, unwrapped toys that I’m sure would have made his day.

I asked him who they were for and he said, “For the people that need them more than me.”

His response was perfect and couldn't have been more truthful and most likely the product of a conversation that was started at home.

Thank you to everyone who has donated to our Holiday Wishes program as well as the parents who have sent in their children with donations and made a ‘moment’ out of this concept that sits so closely to our hearts.

If you or someone you know is interested in donating we are still accepting unwrapped toys and gift cards until December 17th 2013.

This I know for sure...
