A Visitor is coming to Forest Grove

Hiat Labib - Friday, October 18, 2013

On Thursday October 24th exquisite author, Tina Dine will join Forest Grove for a reading of her book, The Little Red Stocking.

The heartwarming book discusses the challenges she faced during the adoption process that brought Her daughter into her and her families lives forever.

Adoption can be a tricky thing for a young mind to try to make sense of, so if your child is not familiar with this topic a family discussion over the weekend may be  helpful preparation for our special visitor.

Keep Calm and Gobble On.

Happy Thanksgiving to our Forest Grove family.
May your weekend be filled with plump turkeys, baked goods and family time.

Don't forget that Forest Grove will remain closed on Monday October 14th 2013
and will reopen on Tuesday October 15th.

“We'll be Friends Forever, won't we, Pooh?" asked Piglet.
"Even longer," Pooh answered.

They vs. Us

Hiat Labib - Friday, October 04, 2013

As I sat with a group of pre-teen girls in the Studio 7 After School Program chatting about everything from Miley to smoking it was clear these lovely ladies were at the beginning stages of determining what is and isn't appropriate. A combination of family influence, moral compass and faith were obvious influences yet, it was all their own.

I was all game in mediating this conversation until I heard, "Ew they're so weird".  Now, I'm not even sure if the topic is necessary to discuss however, there was officially a 'They' and 'They' were unlike 'Them'.

I swiftly pressed pause on the conversation and shared a piece of advice for all of the 'Others' they fail to understand; Rather than be afraid of what you don't understand find out what makes you the same.

These girls weren't pleased with my advice, like... at all. One of the more inquisitive ones said, "so your telling me (fill in the blank with whatever type of person you'd like) isn't WEIRD?" I wanted to shout out "NO, THEY'RE HUMAN BEINGS" but that would have defeated the purpose so I stated the obvious; maybe they ARE weird but what I know isn't weird is that a mom and a dad brought them into this world, they don't like to hurt or be alone, they eat, drink, sleep and laugh just like us and those things are definitely not weird."

Victory!!! I watched the light bulb go off and I had an ultimate 'teacher moment'.  Seconds later one of the girls responded "Ya.. like actually, it's not really weird. Like, I'm cool with it.... but you know what IS WEIRD - TWERKING!!!"

Touche my friend... touche.

All day, every day is how teachers and childcare providers refer to the new kindergarten structure that will be effective in all schools across Ontario as of 2014. Working at Forest Grove and having the luxury of sharing an open dislodge with parents has allowed us to hear the plethora of opinions regarding the program. However, there seems to be a consistent consensus among all parents; Children now require preparation for kindergarten since kindergarten is no longer preparation for grade school.

At Forest Grove Preschool our Pre-K program is ideal for parents that want their children to 'lean into school' rather than risk overwhelming them with the 'jump right in' approach. Our preschool program is designed to meet the needs of every family and child by allowing parents to choose the number of days, times and schedule.

For more information feel free to call Forest Grove - we're here for you.. all day.... every day.... well, sort of.

Well isn't this the truth

Forest Grove After School Program

Hiat Labib - Tuesday, September 10, 2013

Forest Grove has some pretty fantastic programs which (luckily enough) get some pretty wonderful reviews from our community, families and most importantly the kids. However, every now and then we have a program or studio that slips under the radar.

So lets talk, After School Program for a second.

Kids are pretty resilient creatures they bounce back from the most horrific knee scrapes in mere moments, forget about a broken toy in record time and manage to forget about 'serious talks' in milliseconds. Yet, these wildly wonderful creatures also get tired... way tired... very tired... fall-asleep-while-talking-tired. On top of being tired add in some September jitters, new peers and a bunch of new teachers that expect their names to get memorized asap and you've created a whole lotta things going on in one little tiny body.

Forest Groves approach to our after school program is to acknowledge that all of these factors play a role in how we cater to 'our' kids and how to give them a program based on the freedom to choose.

From our homework section to wood working table, children are given a plethora of choices with as much or as little assistance they need from their after school teachers. The objective is to create a space that is inticing enough to spark curiosity after a long day yet relaxing enough to allow our students to feel like Forest Grove is their home away from home.

For more information on our after school program please look under our Programs tab and learn more about what makes Forest Grove such an outstanding option in childcare.
